NEWSLETTER #55 - JUNE 2006 EDITORIAL IMPRESSIONS BY DOUG BASTIN
ART IN THE AIR As previewed in March this issue features the researches of Philip Swales into 30s aviation artist Howard Leigh. Here are two typical views, a Westland Lysander and the Short-Mayo Maia-Mercury flying-boat/seaplane composite.
The theme of British artist cards taken up elsewhere in an extended What Do You Know and one of the odder types pictured by Leigh turns up in Worth a Second Glance. Looking forward to September, a few members have welcomed the “themed issue” approach so I will be looking for contributions on an Arctic/Antarctic theme for December (exploration, far-north airports etc) and, in case the A.380 actually makes it into service near September , anything on “the biggest” (Dornier Do.X, Brabazon, Princess Ju.G38, B-36, XC-99 or anything else that made such a claim in its time) for that issue.
